Bike Storage

by Katy on May 18, 2011

If you want to start pedaling but don’t think you have the space for a bike, remember, think vertical!  Last year, I blogged about a great storage option for bicycles, and in my NY Times article, we showcased a unique bike mount.  Don’t let a small space stop you from enjoying some Green Transportation!

Bicycle Sharing

by Katy on May 17, 2011

While in Barcelona a month ago, one of the coolest things I learned about was their bike sharing program.  Residents of Barcelona can purchase a monthly “credit card” allowing them to pick up and drop off bikes in locations all over the city including immediately outside every subway station.  Just swipe your card, jump on a bike, and off you go…

While this phenomenon has been a little slow to catch on in the US, there are several cities who have active bicycle sharing programs.  If you live in Arlington, Minneapolis, or one of the other US cities who have adapted this type of program, I encourage you to take advantage of it now, and start cycling away!

Bike to Work Week starts Monday

by Katy on May 12, 2011

According to National Geographic, if every American living within 5 miles of their work commuted by bike, it would be like taking a million cars of the road entirely.

Want to do your daily part in Going Green?  Hop on the bandwagon (or the bikewagon) and bike to work next week!  This initiative is in league with National Bike Month, and if you want to do your part to lower car emissions, start pedaling today!  To find events in your area promoting bike use, click here!

In Manhattan, space is at a premium!  Finding room for a bed can be a challenge, so it’s no surprise the home office sometimes gets pushed and shoved into whatever available corner, no matter how inconvenient.

My advice to those dealing in smaller spaces would be to take a fresh look at your floorplan. Sometimes a unique solution is the answer.

A few weeks ago, we worked on a 1 bedroom apartment where the client’s “office” was in her bedroom.  It was crowded and cramped!  Not to mention, that we never think it’s a good idea to work in the bedroom.  It’s so important that the bedroom be a peaceful sanctuary for rest.

After taking a look at the rest of the apartment, I realized she had the perfect “nook” in her front foyer- it was virtually empty!

We added the desk, put up some shelves and before the day was over, a clean and functional office space was born!

Now, there’s a specific place for work that does not interfere with the relaxation of the bedroom!

Rules for Working from Home

by Katy on May 3, 2011

I was flipping through Real Simple Magazine the other day and came across a great article regarding the Home Office.  They outlined some great organizing tips on how to stay on track working from home, so I’d like to share some of my favorites:

1. Schedule Your Time- studies show that people who work from home tend to actually waste large amounts of time on the phone and internet.  Get out of this habit by staying away from personal emails and social networking sites- and never check your personal email first thing in the morning- it will distract you from the business at hand!

2. When you can’t devote an entire room for a home office, get rid of a large desk- instead opt for a smaller version, or even sturdy shelves.

3.  If you can’t spread out, go up!  Utilize the vertical space in your room.

The Home Office

by Katy on May 2, 2011

According to the US Census, over 11.3 million Americans work from home.  Even if you don’t work from home, chances are great that you have some sort of home office.

Whether it’s a bill-paying station, a homework area, or computer desk, any “work” that’s done at home needs it’s own space.

One of the biggest complaints we hear about when dealing with home office is that the office seems to take over and there’s no separation from the “home” and the “office.”  This week, we’ll provide some tips and tricks on keeping your office separate from your living space.
